Toy Story 5, now showing in theaters, continues the beloved series with another heartwarming adventure. Though the story felt complete after Toy Story 4, this new film focuses on Jessie and explores what it means to be useful and loved in a digital age.
Jessie is now the leader of Bonnie’s toys. Bonnie, an eight-year-old girl, has trouble making new friends, and her parents soon realize she is the only one of her peers without a tablet. When she finally receives Lily, a frog-themed children’s tablet, she quickly connects with her dance class members and gets invited to a sleepover. However, this reminds Jessie of her painful past — she was abandoned by her first owner Emily when the girl grew up and lost interest in toys. Fearing the same fate, Jessie decides to act.
Jessie believes true friendship is built through shared imagination and face-to-face play, not endless screen time. She enlists Woody and tries to come between Bonnie and Lily, hoping to help Bonnie make a real friend. Meanwhile, the toys meet some abandoned playthings who claim that “the age of toys is over” because children now spend all their time tapping screens. This adds to their anxiety. The film mixes humor with serious themes, showing the toys’ fear of becoming outdated and forgotten. There are exciting chase scenes and secret missions as they race to win back Bonnie’s attention.
A conflict arises between old-fashioned toys and new smart devices, including a snarky (讽刺挖苦的) digital potty trainer named Smarty Pants. Buzz hopes to propose to Jessie, but the chaos delays his plans. Although Woody and Buzz have smaller roles this time, new characters like camera Snappy and GPS hippo Atlas bring fresh fun. Jessie also tries to bring Bonnie together with Blaze, a horse-loving girl with a creative spirit.
Jessie and Bonnie both learn that what matters most is not the amount of time we have with loved ones, but the quality of it. Though it covers familiar ground, Toy Story 5 is still funny and moving, proving these toys are far from outdated.
